Chrome Browser "Kiosk Mode" (Full-Screen, Locked URL)

This guide explains how to launch Google Chrome in kiosk mode, displaying only one website in full screen with no browser UI (no address bar, tabs, or top banner).

Chrome True Kiosk Mode (Full-Screen, Locked URL)

This guide explains how to launch Google Chrome in true kiosk mode, displaying only one website in full screen with no browser UI (no address bar, tabs, or top banner).

This is ideal for:

  • Registration kiosks

  • Check-in stations

  • Guest-facing terminals

  • Locked-down displays

What This Setup Does

✔ Opens a single website
✔ Runs full full-screen (no browser chrome at all)
✔ Prevents browsing the internet
✔ Easy to exit (admin only)
✔ Works for any URL

Requirements

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11

  • Google Chrome installed

  • Physical access to the machine (not Remote Desktop)

Step 1: Close Chrome Completely (Required)

Chrome will not enter kiosk mode if it is already running.

  1. Close all Chrome windows

  2. Open Task Manager

  3. End all of the following:

    • chrome.exe

    • Google Crash Handler

Step 2: Create the Kiosk Shortcut

  1. Right-click on the Desktop

  2. Select New > Shortcut

Shortcut Target (COPY EXACTLY)

Replace YOUR_URL_HERE with your desired website.

"C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --kiosk --no-first-run --disable-infobars --disable-session-crashed-bubble --disable-extensions --disable-pinch --overscroll-history-navigation=0 --user-data-dir=C:\Temp\ChromeKiosk YOUR_URL_HERE

Example:

"C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --kiosk --user-data-dir=C:\Temp\ChromeKiosk https://google.com

3. Click Next

4. Name the shortcut (example):

- Chrome Registration Kiosk

5. Click Finish

Step 3: Launch Kiosk Mode

Double-click the shortcut.

Expected Behavior

  • Website fills the entire screen

  • No address bar

  • No tabs

  • No browser frame

  • No taskbar

To exit kiosk mode, use the following keyboard command:

Alt + F4

Optional: Auto-Launch on Login (Startup)

To make the kiosk start automatically when the user logs in to that Windows PC:

  1. Press Win + R

  2. Enter: shell:startup

  3. Press Enter

  4. Move the kiosk shortcut into this folder

Common Issues & Fixes

❌ Browser top bar is still visible

This means Chrome did not enter kiosk mode.

Fix:

  • Ensure all Chrome processes were closed

  • Relaunch using the shortcut

  • Do not open Chrome normally first

❌ Kiosk does not go full screen in RDP or VM

Chrome kiosk mode is limited in:

  • Remote Desktop

  • Virtual machines

  • Citrix / VDI

Fix:
Test directly on the physical machine.

❌ Chrome profile or policies interfere

The --user-data-dir flag forces a clean profile and avoids policy issues.

Do not remove it.

Security Notes (Important)

This setup:

  • Locks Chrome, not Windows

  • Users can still access the OS unless restricted separately

For public kiosks, use:

  • A dedicated Windows user

  • Limited permissions

  • (Optional) Windows Assigned Access
