Restoring From A BackBlaze Snapshot

If restoring a duplicati back up through pulling the files directly from the B2 site is taking an extended period of time or failing, this method can save time as it doesn't rely on a lengthy connection to BackBlaze that might be on a location's slow/unstable internet.

 

 

CREATING AND DOWNLOADING A BACKBLAZE SNAPSHOT 

 

  • Log into BackBlaze
  • Browse to the bucket that is holding the location's backup
  • Select the check box next to the location's folder and press the snapshot button at the top of the list
    • Make sure to select to include all B2 hidden files and versions
    • Rename the snapshot .zip to something friendly that anyone could figure out
  • Press make a snapshot
  • Go to the snapshots section and you should see you named snapshot and it's status.
    • Depending on size of the folder, the snapshot process can take a few hours
  • When the snapshot is ready, download it to where it is needed (your local PC, VM, location's server, etc.)
  • Unzip the file to a location you will remember once it is done downloading

 

DUPLICATI RESTORE USING THE LOCAL FILES

 

  • Open Duplicati where you are restoring the back up and press restore
  • Select direct restore from backup files
    • Press next
  • Storage type drop down should be set to local folder or drive
  • Navigate to the location of the unzipped BackBlaze snapshot in the folder path field
    • press next
  • Enter the passphrase used when setting up the Duplicati backup task (most likely 20nvadwiqf78w)
    • Press connect
  • Select the backup date and the files that you wish to restore from that backup date
    • If you need to get a track up and running quickly, restoring just the database is preferred
    • Press continue
  •  Select if you wish to restore the files to the original location or to a specified location
  • Check save different versions with timestamp in file name
  • Check restore read/write permissions
    • Press restore
  • Wait for the files to be restored to the location you specified. You may need to rename the database file for it to be used
